Mr. Zhou Wenyue from Fosun Pharma

On October 31st, 2009, Metizo kicked off a new personal development certification program with Antai-Euromed MBA (AEMBA) intake 2009 students in Shanghai.
What makes this teaching session a bit different is that we invited a charismatic guest speaker to exchange with the students about how companies manage the personal development of their employees: Mr. Zhou Wenyue, Vice President, General Manager of HR Dept., Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical (Group) Co., Ltd.
Starting with his personal adventures in the business world from 1980s until now, Mr. Zhou described how he followed his dream, changed his career, and helped a Chinese local pharmaceutical company grow into a giant international enterprise, starting from the scratch.
Taking the perspective of a senior business leader, Mr. Zhou emphasized that every employee in the company must have the entrepreneurship spirit, who strongly links one’s personal aspirations with the organization’s long-term success. In order to promote this company culture, Mr. Zhou started from building up a very strong business-driven HR team years ago. Now, from the head quarter to different business units, this HR team is already strategic enough to be able talk with the leadership team about HR initiatives, rather than only a supporting center. Based on this, they did an extensive Management Trainee recruitment last year, did the benchmark survey in the MNC of mature talent development systems earlier this year, established a “Fosun Pharma Entrepreneur Club” for employees to exchange their insights on entrepreneurship, and also start to build up a Corporate University to implement cascaded talent development programs step by step.
All these may seem common in big MNC; however, this kind of systematic approach of developing a solid people pipeline can certainly be regarded as pioneering in Chinese local companies and has already manifested a great impact on Fosun Pharma’s extraordinary business success even during the global recession.

The speech lasted over an hour, with active interactions between Mr. Zhou and the students all along. After the speech, the students responded to us that they were very much inspired by the powful stand of Mr. Zhou as a business leader, much beyond a traditional supporting HR role, who strongly promote the talent development strategy for the business success of a Chinese company stepping into the global market.
