Challenges/needs
Personal development is becoming a recognized area of management practice. It no longer is a specialization within psychology or organizational management; it is a subject in its own right with specific research areas involving identity, lifestyle and career decision-making, human capital strategy, autonomous learning and competency development, self-awareness, self-assessment and self-confidence.
In 2008, to better support the personal & managerial development of its participants , Nanyang business school invited Professor Bob Aubrey, CEO of Metizo, to deliver a key course for both MBA and EMBA students.
Solution
This course draws on Metizo’s global knowledge base for personal development in companies as well as higher education. The tools and templates are benchmarked with best practice in managing high potentials and are constantly being updated.
The learning method is based on an entrepreneurial approach to career development. While analytical approaches rely heavily on assessment methods to identify work preferences and personality traits, the entrepreneurial approach is more similar to corporate strategy, taking into account issues of markets, risk, change and opportunity. The most important trait of the entrepreneurial approach is that it is creative and takes into account personal valuation criteria: the goal is not only to maximize the economic return on human capital but also to realize aspirations, to have a successful lifestyle and to contribute to society.
Outcomes
This course allows students to use themselves & their situation as a real life example of personal & management development since a large percentage of MBA and EMBA students change their career orientation during their studies. The opportunity of doing this with other students in an educational process allows them to draw on the diversity of others experiences and ideas to develop their own careers.
