    Challenges/needs

Metizo, together with the Business School of Renmin University, piloted the first personal development course for academic credit for undergraduates in China in 2005.

    Solution

This course used an “inside out” design, starting with individual priorities and feedback from significant observers. By using a variety of learning methods: lectures, case studies, career development tools, assessment, coaching, role playing and skill-building exercises, students gained a practical understanding of career development in the business world. The course also provided opportunities for students to make contact with career development practitioners and exchange understandings with HR managers, recruiters and entrepreneurs.

The key messages to the students were:

  • Personal development is creative: your personal goals are not limited to maximizing the economic return on your human capital; you also want to achieve personal aspirations, develop your potential, build a satisfying lifestyle for yourself and those you share your life with, as well as making a positive contribution to society.
  • Lifestyles and careers emerge as one tries different things and they are also opportunistic.

    Outcomes

This course adopted an entrepreneurial approach to personal development rather than a psychological or theoretical approach. Metizo required undergraduates to work on industry research projects and internships during school holidays. The high quality report shows strong impact on the students. When they graduated in 2008, the group of students in the pilot program were very highly appreciated employers.
